Course Overview

This course is an integrated study of Steiner’s picture of child development with artistic and craft experiences based on the rhythm of the year. It is a most inspiring course whether you are embarking on the path to become a Rudolf Steiner Early Childhood teacher or whether you are a carer, or involved with home-based child care or play groups. Attending this course is also very popular with parents who wish to bring greater understanding to their parenting and nurturing skills.

OUTCOME
This course provides the minimum qualification needed to be an assistant in a Steiner Early Childhood setting (Government qualifications needed). Statement of Course Completion with submission of all assignments OR Statement of Attendance with no assignments required.
Graduates of this course will have fulfilled the pre-requisite to study the EC02 Certificate Course.

Course Subjects

In addition to the lectures, workshops and artistic experiences we offer an (optional) visit to a Steiner Pre-school or Kindergarten. There are six assignments – some are essays, some in class presentations and completion of craft items. These assignments are optional unless you wish to proceed with further study in early childhood.

Module 1: Child Development

This module is designed to provide an overview of Steiner’s picture of child development.

It also facilitates the students’ understanding of the spiritual foundation of Rudolf Steiner early childhood education.

Module 2: Caring for the Young Child

A practical module, caring for the young child, aims to offer a picture of what is important in the environment of a young child and how to nurture their life forces through rhythm, nutrition and appropriate toys.

Module 3: Life Activities

Imitation is a key feature of the life activity of the young child in this age group. In this module students learn how to work with imitation and example as well as exploring the importance and features of self-directed play.

The Festivals form an important backdrop to the rhythm of the year and offer a concrete path to reverence, awe and gratitude.

Module 4: Creative Experiences for Children

Music, song, verses and movement support the development of children and these are explored in this module. The power of story-telling and its effects are a key component here too. Various craft activities are introduced to support these creative experiences.

Course Subjects

Module 5: Child Observation

Observing, recording and interpreting a child’s actions and behaviour are key skills and need to be fostered in the educator and carer. This module offers the beginning of child study according to the specific method and approach indicated by Rudolf Steiner.

Module 6: The Role of the Educator

The educator/carer forms relationships with the children and their parents/guardians. An understanding of these interactions is a vital part in the education of the young child and also involves the conscious development of the inner life of the educator/carer. Time is spent exploring these relationships, difficulties and the art of communication – verbal and non-verbal.

Module 7: Children in the World of Today

Children today are born into a reality where technology is ever-present. This module attempts to give some guidance and parameters for the educator/carer in the use of technology with the young child with reference to the healthy development of the human being as indicated in Steiner’s picture.

Module 8: Music, Art and Craft for the self-development of adults

Artistic experiences in some of music, painting, eurythmy, clay and soft toy-making are offered to the students to enhance their own skill and development. The importance of the mood of the fifth in music to the development of the young child is emphasised.
