Course Outline

This course will equip participants with the skills they need in order to embark upon a Knitting Project with a Primary Class. Participants will learn practical techniques in order to teach knitting to students, and will be supported in the development of lesson sequences with the clear end goal of a completed item of knitting that students can keep. Knitting is a tactile skill that, with support where needed, is an achievable skill for any child from the age of seven, regardless of the child’s social, cultural and developmental standpoint. The benefits of knitting, in terms of brain development and the support of critical thinking, literacy and numeracy, are all natural consequences of learning the skill of knitting. Participants will develop an understanding of the current research around handcrafts and its various benefits for the brain; for the development of critical and imaginative thinking; for the development of an artistic sensibility; and for the development of the child’s own intrinsic motivation and persistence with completing projects.

Completing Knitting for Primary: Supporting Learning will contribute 5 hours of NESA registered PD addressing 2.1.2, 2.2.2, 2.5.2, 3.1.2, 3.3.2 and 3.7.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Teachers please note:
