Course Outline

During this course, participants will experiment with a range of texturizing methods and gain practical skills in a variety of advanced watercolour techniques. Topics covered include use of colour based on Goethean colour theory and the use of areas of darkness and light within the tonal range as well as successful classroom management when conducting lessons.

Participants will create a series of three paintings derived from a range of non-western cultural backgrounds including Aboriginal, Egyptian and Indian themes. Participants use a range of watercolour techniques including: laying down a wash, using wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry methods, overlaid wash and layering, lifting out with sponge and brush and working with positive and negative space.

Emphasis will be placed on use of colour to convey expression and mood in relation to cultural identity, and the investigation of harmony and balance in the colour palette. Participants will be introduced to the creation of textural effects using blotting and lifting, erasing/masking with stencils, scraping, scratching and the application of paper and plastic. In each session a different medium will also be used to experiment with layering and texturing the paint: these include wax resist, oil pastels and gum turps wash and aquarelle pencils. By expanding their knowledge and mastering the use of other media, participants have the opportunity to introduce these techniques in the classroom within their own art curriculum.

NB: this is a stand-alone course, but may also be relevant to, and expand on, the experiences obtained in the one day course NWCP181: Visual Arts: Techniques in Watercolour Painting.

Completing Visual Arts: Techniques in Watercolour Painting using a range of mixed media will contribute 6 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 2.1.2, 2.2.2, 2.4.2, 3.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
