Description

Course Outline

During this course, participants will experiment with a wide range of texturizing methods available through the inclusion of mixed media, to be used in association with a variety of advanced watercolour techniques. A series of four paintings will be created featuring flowers, plants and fungi. Emphasis will be placed on investigating the character of organic imagery. Participants use a range of watercolour wash techniques working with sponge and brush, balancing positive and negative space and employing a free association of colour based on Goethe’s colour theories. Participants will investigate the use of colour as a tool of expression. Emphasis will be placed on the creation of textural effects by direct treatment of the painting surface through the application of masking fluid, resists, additives (such as PVA) and the introduction of other textural surfaces (such as glued tissue paper) to create dynamic visual effects. The opportunity will exist for participants to apply other media directly over the painting (such as ink, aquarelle pencil, oil and chalk pastel, and texta); emphasis on harmony and balance through careful planning on going evaluation will be central to these works. By expanding their knowledge and mastering the use of other media, participants have the opportunity to introduce these techniques in the classroom within their own art curriculum.

NB: this is a stand-alone course, but may also be relevant to, and expand on, the experiences obtained in the one-day courses NVAP118 Visual Arts: Techniques in Watercolour Painting and NVAP218 Visual Arts: Techniques in Watercolour Painting using a range of mixed media.

Completing Visual Arts: Advanced techniques in Watercolour Painting using a range of mixed media will contribute 6 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 2.1.2, 3.1.2, and 3.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
